Stewardship Illustrations. When I entered seminary, I remember thinking that my sermon time was too short to waste it telling stories, or illustrating my point. After all, people are not dumb. They can get the point. Well, we're all green at some point in our lives. Jesus told stories. Sometimes his whole "sermon" was a story. Whether your sermon illustration is a story or an example, it is intended to help people get the point and fulfill their call to stewardship.

By stewardship sermon I refer to a sermon that asks for commitment. Yes, the argument can be made that any sermon is a stewardship sermon, but when stewardship becomes everything, it usually becomes nothing. These sermons are designed to be used when a pastor is asking the congregation to prayerfully consider God's call for their giving for the coming year.

There are many fine stewardship sermon sources, and I suggest you consider them one of them in time. I would like to suggest a couple of links to good sources for sermon ideas. For our ELCA stewardship website, click www.elca.org/stewardship.

Also, be sure to check Norma Wimberly and Don Joiner's book, The Abingdon Guide to Funding Ministry. You'll find them in my Stewardship Bibliography.
