A Word about all stewardship programs. Today there is a plethora of stewardship programs that are available. Most work relatively well in many congregations. There is a key to the success of any program. You must work the program. Pay attention to detail. Sloppy or haphazard execution can produce little or no results. In other words, the attempt to take shortcuts in your program will almost certainly short-circuit it.

And remember, the most expensive stewardship program any church ever did is the one that fails.  Just think, if your church has an income of $100,000 and you spend $1000 on your stewardship emphasis and get a $20,000 increase, you just got a 95% return on your investment.  If you spend $100 on your program and it nets you little or nothing, what did that program accomplish, especially if your potential was $20,000 or more. (Remember, a 20 percent increase is nothing unusual in congregations that have effective stewardship ministries.)  Even if your program netted a $1000 increase, such a program would cost your church $18,900 in unrealized potential.  Then too, what kind of spiritual benefits come from such a lackadaisical effort?

A Manual for Year-Round Manual for Stewardship by Eugene Grimm and Richard Bosse. A year-round approach to stewardship that considers three major elements:

          • Regular stewardship emphases such as regular reporting
          • Annual stewardship emphases such as a financial response program and a time and abilities emphasis (never the twain should meet)
          • Periodic steward emphases such as developing a Mission Endowment Fund and conducting a Wills Awareness Seminar

The New Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program by Herb Miller is absolutely one of the finest programs ever designed.  It has been around for many years, and helps congregations not only receive strong financial increases, but also helps them think about stewardship from a spiritual perspective.
